Royal Society for the Blind South Australia - Young Business Leaders
Since 2005, NAB has participated in the Young Business Leaders SA program that aims to develop young people's professional and personal skills.
This year, Olivia McFarlane and Paige Smallacombe from NAB have participated in the program raising over $8,000 for the RSB.
Supporting grassroots AFL
NAB is proud to support the development of all Australian Rules Footballers from grassroots through to the elite level. One program that does this is NAB AFL Auskick. The NAB AFL Auskick program, for children aged 5-12, is managed by the community for the community, with both parents and volunteers getting involved. In South Australia there are 335 NAB AFL Auskick centres with approximately 13,300 children participating.
Over summer, AFL Community Camps were held by Port Adelaide in Whyalla and The Adelaide Crows in the Barossa Valley. As part of the AFL's Community Camp initiative, a NAB AFL Auskick clinic was held by the clubs in each location. NAB representatives attended the clinics and ran a "NAB handball competition", with a signed (by NAB AFL Ambassadors including Garry Lyon and Robert "Dipper" DiPierdomenico) NAB Sherrin as the prize.
During NAB Cup, AAMI Stadium played host to Port Adelaide vs. Carlton on Saturday 16 February, Adelaide vs. Fremantle on Sunday 24 February and Adelaide vs. St Kilda in the Grand Final on 8 March. At these games, footy fans had the opportunity to visit the NAB Zone, an interactive area where they could participate in kicking and handball activities, receive great giveaways and have their face painted in team colours.
Other programs that support junior development are the NAB AFL Under 16 Championships and Under 18 Championships. At a junior football level NAB is also involved in a number of community programs including the NAB Club Recognition Award. This award recognises the junior football clubs responsible for the development of NAB AFL Rising Star Medal nominees and provides the clubs with financial and practical resources to continue the development of players.
No Interest Loan Schemes (NILS®)
In May, South Australia played host to the National NILS conference. Developed by Good Shepherd Youth & Family Service, NILS is a community based micro-credit scheme that has been running for 26 years. The loans enable people on low incomes to purchase essential household goods such as refrigerators and washing machines.
Currently, there are over 260 NILS programs Australia-wide and NAB has committed funding to continue the expansion of this program nationally.
StepUP Loans
NAB's StepUP Loans are now operating in more than 16 locations around Australia including South Australia. Over the last year, 193 loans have been written in South Australia with 800 enquiries. These safe, affordable, low interest loans of between $800 and $3,000 are for individuals or families to purchase essential personal, household and domestic goods and services like fridges, washing machines and cars.
Better Buddies Program
As major sponsor of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation's Better Buddies anti-bullying program, NAB is helping to build safe and caring school communities.
With support from NAB, Angaston Primary School, Birdwood Primary School, Blair Athol Primary School, Braeview Junior Primary School, Darlington Primary School, Eastern Fleurieu R-12 School, Elizabeth East Primary School, Elizabeth Grove Primary School, Elizabeth Vale Primary School, Hamley Bridge Primary School, Hawker Area School, Hendon Primary School, Modbury South Primary School, Mt Gambier North Primary School, Norton Summit Primary School, Our Lady of Grace Primary School, Pooraka Primary School, Tintinara Area School, Victor Harbor Primary School, Waikerie Primary School, Wallaroo Mines Primary School, Westport Primary School and Woodside Primary School in South Australia are incorporating this new program into their schools in 2008.
V2 Classic Bike Ride - Variety Club
Variety South Australia continues to find novel ways to raise funds to inspire hope and enrich the lives of disadvantaged and special needs children in South Australia.
In April, Malcolm Pridham - South Australian Regional Agribusiness Manager, participated in the V2 Classic Bike Ride, which involved riding around country South Australia over the ANZAC day long weekend. Malcolm raised over $6,000 for Variety South Australia.
Australian Business Arts Foundation
Since 2005, NAB has supported the Australian Business Arts Foundation that promotes private sector support for the arts. As part of NAB's involvement, NAB is the category sponsor of the National Australia Bank SME Award for businesses with less than 200 employees partnering with an arts organisation.
Last year's national winner was Port Adelaide Football Club and ComeOut, the Australian Festival for Young People.
Award evenings will be held in each state in September, with the National Winners announced in October.
NAB Microenterprise Loans
In July 2007, NAB launched its Microenterprise Loans throughout Australia. These unsecured, low interest loans of between $500 and $20,000 are for people who are financially disadvantaged and have few or no avenues to access affordable business credit but who have a sound business idea. The three year loans are available for both start up and existing businesses.
For applicants starting a business, NAB also provides access to business skills training and advice during the first year of operation.
Lions Australia - Youth of the Year
In 2008, NAB continues its association with Lions Australia and its annual public speaking competition - Lions Youth of the Year Quest. As well as being sponsor, NAB participates in this event by providing judges at the National, District and State level of the competition.
The Quest is open to students aged 16 - 18 years across Australia and provides opportunities for young people to gain skills and experience which can be used in both their personal and professional lives. The national winner will also attend the World Youth Forum.
South Australian Young Entrepreneur Scheme (SAYES)
NAB has been a major sponsor of SAYES a Business South Australia initiative for the last four years. This initiative aims to provide young South Australians (aged 18 - 30) with the skills needed to start their own business.
The Yachad Accelerated Learning Project
With the support of NAB, this three year educational intervention program aims to raise the academic achievements of students in remote and rural locations in Australia, particularly Indigenous students.
NAB Agribusiness Awards for Excellence
In October 2007, the 12th NAB Agribusiness Awards for Excellence winners were announced. These awards are held annually, acknowledging individuals and organisations that operate in the food, fibre, beverage and agribusiness industries across Australia.
The winners of the 2007 NAB Agribusiness Awards for excellence covered the full gamut of primary producers, their suppliers and leaders. Negociants International, Richard Gunner's Fine Meats and Pellenc Australia from South Australia were finalists in their respective categories.

The Australian Ballet
As lead sponsor of The Australian Ballet, NAB is helping to make ballet more accessible to a greater number of Australians. Through our support of The Australian Ballet's National Education Program, workshops and seminars are held around Australia with Adelaide playing host in May. The Australian Ballet's performance of French Connections played in May and in August, a Classical Triple Bill will be performed by The Dancers Company in Renmark, Port Pirie and Whyalla.
NAB Dance the Dream, a new program initiated by NAB in conjunction with The Australian Ballet, will be visiting Findon, Glengowrie, Mt Barker and Mt Gambier this year. A leading artist from The Australian Ballet will be visiting a ballet school in each area and conducting a class with students followed by the opportunity for the students to hear about the dancer's life and career.
NAB's 150 Tour
This month, the 150 tour makes its way to South Australia stopping in Whyalla, Port Pirie, Gawler, Adelaide, Victor Harbor, Murray Bridge and Mount Gambier.
NAB's Employee Volunteer Program
NAB provides two days paid volunteer leave each year for its employees to carry out voluntary work with a community organisation.
Last year, NAB employees carried out over 7000 volunteer days nationally with many employees also contributing their own free time to community organisations.
Canteen - City to Bay
NAB is in its 10th year of participating in the City to Bay Fun Run. This event raises funds for Canteen - the national organisation that supports young people living with cancer and their families.
Last year, 60 NAB employees took up the challenge raising close to $11,000.
Bedford Industries
NAB continues to support Bedford Industries, South Australia's largest employer for people with a disability. During the year, NAB sponsors a number of events including the Big BBQ and the Butterfly Ball.
The Cancer Council - Relay for Life
For five years, NAB has participated in Relay for Life in South Australia raising money for cancer research and education. To date, NAB has raised close to $40,000 with 46 staff taking part in this year's event.
Julian Burton Burns Trust
NAB continues to be a key supporter of The Burns Trust - Australia's first ever national organisation dedicated to supporting and looking at new ways to care for burns victims.
Barossa Gourmet Weekend
In August, NAB will be the Presentation Rights Sponsor for the Barossa Gourmet Weekend. The SA community will have the opportunity to indulge in food, wine and music throughout the Barossa Valley. This year, the festival will promote awareness of The Heart Foundation who is the charity partner.
Marina Pier Seafood and Wine Festival
In early April, NAB was the major sponsor of the Marina Pier Seafood and Wine Festival held in Glenelg. The festival showcased local restaurants and retailers as well as some of South Australia's young wine makers and developing wineries.
Local community sponsorships
NAB supports local organisations and events through local sponsorship grants. Events supported include The Redback Bodyboarding Pro, Port Lincoln Golf & Seafood Week in October 2007 and The Stirling Community Festival. NAB also sponsors Flinders One - a not-for-profit organisation established to enrich the life of the Flinders University Community.
NAB Sheikh Fehmi El-Imam Scholarship
The NAB Sheikh Fehmi El-Imam Scholarship enables an undergraduate student to continue their post graduate studies in finance and economics in Australia or at an overseas university. As well as the scholarship, the winner receives potential employment opportunities within NAB for 12 months during or at the conclusion of their studies.
After a lengthy application and judging process, Imran K. Lum from Victoria was awarded the 2007 NAB Sheikh Fehmi El-Imam Scholarship. The 2008 winner will be announced in October.
British Council - Realise your Dream
NAB is in the fifth year as principal sponsor with the British Council of Australia's Realise Your Dream program. This annual event sees six young Australians (aged under 30) win the opportunity to work with a mentor in their creative field such as fashion, film, script or visual art.
Last year over 600 entries were received and the winners were Omar Musa - rapper/journalist, Rebecca Parker - writer/director, Katrina Schwarz - editor/art writer/curator, Jess Scully - editor/journalist, Anna Barnes - playwright and Stephen Gilchrist - art curator.

Reach
Reach is an organisation dedicated to helping our youth regardless of their background, gain self-belief by providing them with support and connecting them with each other.
Through NAB's support, programs are run across Australia for teenagers aged 13-18 years.
In August, the Teacher Training program will be held in Adelaide. This program provides teachers and youth professionals with skills (engagement, emotional intelligence) not covered by formal teacher training.
Port Adelaide Football Club
NAB is a key partner of the Port Adelaide Football Club. With over 320,000 supporters throughout Australia, NAB is the official bank of Port Adelaide Football Club. At each home game the most passionate "Power" fan is awarded the NAB Supporter of the Week, with $1,000 placed in a NAB savings account and the chance to ride on Port Adelaide "Thundabolt" float at the next home game.
NAB also leverages this sponsorship to support the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation.
Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation
Since 2001, NAB has been working with the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF) to help find an early detection test for this disease. As the Founding Partner of OCRF, NAB is involved in a number of initiatives over the year to raise funds for this important research.
During August and September, NAB promotes the Silver Ribbon campaign nationally and in 2007 this resulted in NAB raising $670,000 for research into an early detection test.
