What is a gambling restriction?

The gambling restriction gives you the option to restrict certain gambling transactions to help you have greater control over your spending. The restriction applies to certain gambling transactions on your NAB Visa credit or NAB Visa Debit card and can be easily placed or removed using the NAB app.

The restriction covers most gambling transactions (including gambling refunds and winnings) where ‘credit’ is selected and/or you use your card number to complete the transaction.

If you have a NAB StraightUp card, a permanent gambling restriction is automatically in place. If you have a NAB Visa Debit card and are under 18, some gambling restrictions are permanently restricted. International gambling transactions are not permitted on NAB personal credit card accounts.

NAB Traveller Cards and NAB Debit Cards  (sometimes referred to as your NAB Flexi Card) are not eligible for this service.

Transactions that are restricted

The gambling restriction blocks most gambling transactions, including:

  • sports betting
  • casino games
  • lottery tickets
  • online gambling
  • cash advances and transfers from your credit card account

Transactions that aren’t restricted

Situations where the gambling restriction doesn’t apply include:

  • Eftpos transactions where ‘SAV’ or ‘CHQ’ is selected, including gambling transactions where the card is present such as at casinos or TAB merchants (unless you used the NAB app to apply a gambling restriction and have disabled other card controls including online transactions, contactless payments or overseas card use).
  • Cash withdrawals made using your NAB Visa Debit card.
  • Transactions with merchants who are not identified by us as gambling merchants.
  • Transactions made when our systems are down or the merchant terminal is unable to obtain online authorisations.

People who can apply the gambling restriction

NAB Visa credit cardholders

If a primary cardholder and additional cardholder share the same card number, only the primary card holder can apply the gambling restriction. If the gambling restriction applies to one card, it will automatically apply to both cards.

If a primary cardholder and additional cardholder have different card numbers:

  • the additional cardholder can apply the gambling restriction to their card
  • the primary cardholder can apply the gambling restriction to either or both their card and the additional card.

If you’re not sure which type of card you have, check with us.

NAB Visa Debit cardholders

NAB Visa Debit cardholders can restrict gambling transactions on their own NAB Visa Debit card.

People who hold a Power of Attorney

A Power of Attorney holder may in some circumstances be able to request to apply the gambling restriction by calling NAB Customer Support on 1300 308 175 between the hours of Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 7:00pm (AEST/AEDT).

People with third-party access

People who have third-party access to another person’s internet banking and they have a personal NAB Visa Debit or credit card. They can apply the gambling restriction to their card via the NAB app.
