Changes to cryptocurrency payments
From 18 July 2023, we are introducing new customer protections by declining some transactions made to high-risk cryptocurrency exchanges.
Why have we made these changes?
Australia is currently experiencing a scam epidemic. Cryptocurrency scams are one of the fastest-growing threats we see impacting our customers, with Australians losing over $221 million to these scams, opens in new window last year.
Scammers often use cryptocurrency exchanges because they may not be effectively regulated, transactions are harder to trace and recover, and they offer the ability to make money transfers to international and domestic destinations very quickly.
Customers who use these payment methods currently face a significantly higher risk of being scammed.
As a result, we’ve introduced these changes to restrict transactions made to certain cryptocurrency exchanges to protect our customers from these scams.
