Updated policy information booklets

The NAB Card Insurance and NAB Purchase Protection Policy Information Booklets have been updated. All complimentary card insurances for personal cards are now covered under one booklet.

These changes are effective from 1 November 2023 and will apply to events occurring on or after that date. The existing and updated booklets are available below:

The key changes to the booklets are outlined below. This is a summary only, other changes have been made. Please read the updated Policy Information Booklet to make sure you understand the details of the cover provided and to ensure it meets your requirements. Terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and applicable sub-limits apply.

Introduction of Card Levels

New Card Levels have been added which determine the complimentary insurance benefits that may be available.

Use the Card Level table to determine the complimentary insurance benefits that may be available to you depending on your Card Level. Each Part of the booklet will also identify the complimentary insurance benefits available to you depending on your Card Level.

Not all insurance covers are available for all cards and different conditions may also apply depending on your Card Level, so please refer to each Part of the Policy Information Booklet to determine the complimentary insurance benefits that may be available to you.

Card Level definitions

Level 1 card means the following credit cards:

  • NAB Qantas Rewards Signature Card
  • NAB Rewards Signature Card.

Level 2 card means the following credit cards:

  • NAB Low Fee Platinum Card
  • NAB Premium Card
  • NAB Velocity Rewards Premium Card
  • NAB Qantas Rewards Premium Card
  • NAB Rewards Platinum Card
  • NAB Flybuys Rewards Card
  • NAB Low Rate Platinum Card
  • NAB Qantas Plus Card
  • NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card.

Level 3 card means the following cards:

  • NAB Visa Debit Card
  • NAB Low Fee Card
  • NAB Qantas Rewards Card
  • NAB Rewards Classic Card
  • NAB Velocity Rewards Card
  • NAB Visa Mini Card.

Notification period changes

We’ve updated how much notice NAB will give you if the Group Policy is changed or terminated. This will generally be 30 days’ notice except in certain situations (e.g. where the change is favourable to you or where it doesn’t change the insurance cover).

Updated and new definitions

We’ve updated or added various definitions including:

  • updated definition of ‘dependant’
  • added definition of ‘income’
  • added definition of ‘permanent disability’
  • updated definition of ‘pre-existing medical condition’
  • added definition of what ‘reasonable’ means
  • updated definition of ‘relative’.

These definitions should be read in conjunction with the relevant section of the Policy Information Booklet.

Letter of eligibility availability

A letter of eligibility can only be obtained for international travel insurance. You can apply for one online through Allianz Global Assistance, opens in new window.

Limitation of cover changes

The limitation of cover section has been updated to clarify that Allianz will not provide cover or be liable to pay any claim or provide a benefit where doing so would create international law risks.

Improvements to readability

Various changes have been made to:

  • make the booklet easier to read
  • clarify the steps you should take if you think you need to make a claim
  • highlight the importance of taking reasonable care and precautions (e.g. by safeguarding your covered items or valuables).

International travel insurance (for persons aged under 81 years)

Eligibility for cover changes

  • This insurance is only available to cardholders who are aged under 81 years at the time they become eligible for cover.
  • You must have a return overseas travel ticket before leaving Australia. Spouse and/or dependants also need to have a return ticket to be eligible for cover.
  • Dependants under the age of 2 are covered if they are travelling with the cardholder for at least 50% of the cardholder’s overseas journey.

Period of cover changes

  • Maximum period of cover has been updated - 6 months for Level 1 Cards and 3 months for Level 2 Cards.
  • Clarification of when the period of cover ends and when it may be extended.

The table below sets out the amounts and maximum limits of what we will pay under each section of international travel insurance. All limits and sub-limits in the table are shown in Australian dollars.

The cover available is outlined in Part E – The Cover Available and is subject to the applicable terms, conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusions. The cover described in the table below is a summary only.

No cover is available for dependants.

1.8 Assault requiring Hospital Admission $500 per person.
1.9 Permanent Disability $50,000 per cardholder or spouse. Dependants are included in the limit available to the cardholder or spouse.
2.1 Cancellation Up to a maximum total limit per cardholder or spouse of $50,000 (dependants are included in the limit available to the cardholder or spouse) except:
2.1.1 a] Travel agents cancellation fees $2,000 or the level of commission or service fee earned on the booking by the travel agent, whichever is the lesser.
2.1.1 b] Rescheduling your journey

Up to $75 per person per day, up to a maximum total limit of $500 per person for reasonable additional meal costs.

Up to a maximum total limit of $250 per person for reasonable internet use and telephone expenses to reschedule your journey.

2.2 Withdrawal of services $50 per person per 24 consecutive hours, up to a maximum total limit of $500 per cardholder or spouse. Dependants are included in the limit available to the cardholder or spouse.

3.6 Emergency Accommodation due to Terrorism Up to $300 per person, per day, up to a maximum total limit of $3,000 per cardholder or spouse. Dependants are included in the limit available to the cardholder or spouse.
3.7 Hijack Up to a maximum total limit of $10,000 per cardholder or spouse. Dependants are included in the limit available to the cardholder or spouse.
4.1 Luggage Up to a maximum total limit of $15,000 per cardholder or spouse. Dependants are included in the limit available to the cardholder or spouse, subject to the following sub-limits:
4.1.1 a] Stolen, accidentally damaged or permanently lost covered items

Up to $4,000 per item for computers, cameras and video cameras.

Up to $1,000 per item for any other covered item, including mobile phones.

Cover availability changes

  • Cover may be available if you are diagnosed with a sickness recognised as an epidemic or pandemic (such as COVID-19) under Overseas Emergency Assistance, Overseas Emergency Medical, Cancellation and Additional Expenses. Travel companions may also be covered under Cancellation and Additional Expenses.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions may be covered with approval from Allianz Global Assistance by applying for an assessment online or over the phone (a $75 assessment fee applies).
  • Various general and specific exclusions have been updated and/or clarified.

Domestic travel insurance (previously interstate flight inconvenience insurance)

This insurance has been renamed from interstate flight inconvenience insurance to domestic travel insurance.

Eligibility for cover changes

  • Prior to commencing your journey: you must charge the entire cost of your return domestic flight ticket to your card; or at least $250 of your prepaid travel costs and have a return domestic flight ticket.
  • Spouse and dependants are also eligible if they meet the same criteria above and travel with the cardholder for at least 50% of the journey.
  • Flights to any destination in Australia on a commercial airline are now covered.

Period of cover changes

The maximum period of cover available is 28 days per journey for Level 1 Card cardholders and 14 days per journey for Level 2 Card cardholders.

This insurance is being removed entirely. This means you won’t be covered under this insurance for an event that occurs on or after 1 November 2023.

Purchase protection insurance

This insurance is now found in the one Policy Information Booklet for all eligible cards.

The benefit limits table sets out the maximum limits of what we will pay under Purchase Protection Insurance.

Benefit limits

Purchase price charged to card account except for jewellery, watches and new works of art which are limited to $5,000 per claim. Maximum total limit for all claims in any twelve (12) consecutive month period is $200,000 per card account.

General exclusions have been updated and/or clarified.

Extended warranty insurance

Period of cover changes

Cover applies from the date the manufacturer’s warranty expires and applies for the same period as the manufacturer’s warranty for up to a maximum of one full year. However, there is no cover if the manufacturer’s warranty exceeds five years.

Claims, complaints and disputes

How to make a claim

  • Check that you are entitled to claim by reading the appropriate section in the booklet to see exactly what is and isn’t covered. Please do not contact NAB in the event of a claim.Allianz Global Assistance administers the benefits available under the group policy.
  • In order to be sure that any expenses you claim are covered by the Group Policy you should contact Allianz Global Assistance for approval before you incur expenses you wish to claim.
  • You can lodge your international travel insurance travel claim online at claimmanager.com.au/nab. Allianz Global Assistance will consider your claim within 10 business days of receiving a completed claim form and all requested documentation.

Information about the complaints process has been updated for clarity as well as information about the General Insurance Code of Practice.

Complimentary mobile phone insurance

From 12 June 2024, NAB Rewards Signature Card customers are eligible for complimentary mobile phone insurance.
