Things to know before closing your account

  • Present any outstanding cheques.
  • Make sure you withdraw all your funds from the account before you close it.
  • If you want to close a NAB iSaver account, you’ll need to transfer the money into an eligible transaction account before closing the account.
  • If your account is overdrawn, you’ll have to pay that amount back including, any accrued debit interest before we can close it.
  • You’ll be responsible for any transactions you make before your account is closed. Tap on the detailed transaction description in the NAB app to check. The account can only be closed once any pending debit card transactions have been posted.
  • Cancel recurring payments and direct debits set up on the account. You can contact us to cancel a direct debit arrangement on your account and we’ll do this promptly. You’ll need to contact the merchant directly if you’ve set up recurring payments using your NAB Visa Debit card details (for example, for a gym membership).
  • Check the account linked to your PayID® is not the one you’re wanting to close. If it is, update the account linked to the PayID.

After you’ve successfully closed your account

  • Make sure you destroy any linked cards by cutting through the chip, magnetic strip, and security code on the back.
  • Take reasonable steps to prevent the debit card number and expiry date of the cards from being used again.
