What is a payee?

Your payee (such as a real estate agent) is the business that has provided you with an invoice for the products or services they have provided. Your payee is responsible for supplying you with your Payer Reference Number (PRN) and specifying the amount due and payment date.

Your payee’s name will be displayed as their registered business name rather than their trading name so it may seem unfamiliar to you. You can search this name on ABN lookup, opens in new window to view the trading name and confirm that you’re paying the correct payee.

While it’s unlikely, it’s possible that when you enter your PRN, the listed payee is not who you want to pay. If this happens, double check the number provided to you by your payee – it may have arrived via email or phone, or it may be on a recent invoice you’ve received.

If you’ve misplaced your PRN or the listed payee is still incorrect, contact your Payee for help – NAB doesn’t hold these records.

Adding an additional payee

To add a payee in NAB Portal Pay, you’ll need a unique Payer Reference Number (PRN) that has been sent to you by your payee. It may have arrived via email or phone, or it may be on a recent invoice you’ve received.

When you first set up your profile, you’ll have to enter your PRN and the Payee associated with this PRN will be automatically added to your account when you login for the first time.

How to add a payee

  1. Log in to NAB Portal Pay, opens in new window, enter your email address and password and select Log in.
  2. Select Payees from the grey navigation bar or select Manage payees on the payees tile.
  3. Once on the payees page, select Add new Payee.
  4. Enter your PRN and select Next.
  5. Verify that the listed payee is correct, enter a payee nickname (this is optional) and select Save.

Your Payee will be saved to your Payees list and you’ll now be able to make a payment to them.

Change a payee nickname

  1. Once on the payees page, select the button with the chevron icon (>) for the payee whose nickname you would like to change.
  2. Select Edit and you’ll be able to enter a payee nickname. Please note payee nicknames must be unique and can only contain letters or numbers.
  3. Confirm that you’re happy with the payee nickname and select Save.
