What you’ll need to apply

Here's what you need to know about applying and eligibility. If you’re a NAB customer, have your NAB IDYour NAB ID is an 8 to 10 digit number given to you when you first become a NAB customer.  There are three ways to find your NAB ID: 1. We send it to you via email and SMS when you first become a customer. 2. On the back of your credit card or debit card, above the magnetic strip. Not all cards have this. 3. In the NAB app once you've registered for internet banking. Your NAB ID can be found under More and then My Details. This option is only available for personal profiles (not business ones). and password ready.

Identify yourself

If you’re a new customer, we’ll need either:

  • your passport

  • your driver's licence

  • your Medicare card (can only be used in conjunction with another form of ID if you’re 18 years or older)

Check your eligibility

You must be both:

  • 14 years of age or older

  • an Australian resident for tax purposes

How do I open an account?

If you’re 14 years old or over

You can apply for a NAB Classic Banking account online if you’re 14 years or older and an Australian resident for tax purposes. If you’re not an Australian resident you can open an account at a NAB branch.

If you’re under the age of 14

If you’re under the age of 14, you will need to go into a branch with your parent or guardian to open an account.

What you’ll need to open the account

You’ll need to present identification documents when you open the account. This can include things like:

  • your birth certificate
  • Proof of Age card
  • a valid Australian driver’s licence.

If you’re looking to open a NAB Retirement account, visit a NAB branch.


Can I get a NAB Visa Debit card if I’m visiting from overseas?

If you're visiting Australia from overseas, you will be able to get a NAB Visa Debit card unless you are here on a short stay visitor / tourist visa. If this is your case, speak to one of our bankers about other products that may suit your needs.

Can I use Visa payWave on large purchases, or just smaller ones?

Visa payWave is a secure way to make purchases of any size. If the purchase is under $100, you won’t need to use your PIN so you can just tap and go. For purchases over $100, the process is almost as quick. The only difference is you’ll need to enter your PIN.

Other account options to consider

NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card and NAB Visa Debit Cards require a linked NAB transaction account. You can link an existing NAB transaction account within your debit card application or open a fee-free NAB Classic Banking account, as well as a savings account.
